The movie revolves around John Bennett (played by Mark Wahlberg), a young boy who, on his sixth birthday, makes a wish that his newfound teddy bear, Ted, comes to life. To his surprise, Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) becomes a living, breathing, and foul-mouthed companion. As years pass, John and Ted grow up together, but their friendship faces a challenge when a beautiful woman, Sarah (played by Mila Kunis), enters John's life.
